Area of compound shapes

Remember that the Area of a shape is the space inside, and what symbol is used to show it.  (Don't confuse area with perimeter, which is the distance around the outside of a shape!)

To find the correct area of this compound shape, calculate the unmarked sides and divide the shape into rectangles. Then add the area of each rectangle together.

Do you see by using the second diagram what you need to calculate? Remember to find the area of each rectangle and then add them together. What is the area of the whole shape?
