English Thursday 23rd April

One bright sunny morning, a solitary teacher sat at her computer to begin her daily blog to the children in her class. Although she loved teaching the children in person, she was really enjoying receiving and reading their work via emails which they sent to her every day. For a while, she sat sipping her morning cup of tea, starring out of the window and wondering what activity she could set.

As she looked out of her window, she could see a beautiful, clear blue sky, she could hear the birds tweeting and the trees that were bursting with blossom swaying gently in the breeze; a perfect day for a scary story......

Today children, I would like you to continue the story from yesterday's reading comprehension.

Before you begin to write, you might like to think about the answer to these questions.

Why was Catherine going to the basement?
What kind of dragon was at the end of the corridor? What did it look like?
Why was the dragon there?
What did the dragon do to Catherine?
What did Catherine do to the dragon?
How did the story end?
Is there a cliff hanger?

To make your story scary you need to build the tension by including descriptions of how the character feels/ behaves. Remember a good writer shows how someone is feeling by describing their actions/behaviour and by what they say or think.

Instead of   She was scared    write  her hand was trembling as she reached out to touch...
Instead of   She whispered," I don't know what to do" write She wondered, "Should I go in? Should I wait here?"

Finally here are some adjectives and verbs you might want to use.

I will be giving 5 merit points to the writers of the best stories and putting them on the blog.
Have fun and watch out for dragons!
