Good morning!
Our History topic has been looking at life 100 years ago.
Our History topic has been looking at life 100 years ago.
Not this week, though. Instead, we are going back in time 75 years ago, to 1945.
This week is a little different, as Friday is a Bank Holiday. The 8th of May is a day of celebration. (You might want to wear the colours of Red, White and Blue!) Why? It is the 75th Anniversary of VE day.
You will find all about VE Day with the activities below. Be sure to have a look at them all. We've got History, of course, with tomorrow being a special day. Be sure to have a really look at both of the links provided. Following that is a reading activity with some short questions, followed by the... Morse Code Challenge! For Art, you can do a poster, or perhaps create some VE Day bunting! (See that part of the blog a bit later further down.)
Happy celebrating!
What was
VE DAY?
This means Victory in
Europe day, which marked the end of World War Two (WWII), when on 8th
May 1945, Winston Churchill announced on the radio that the war in Europe had
come to an end.
Every year since 1945,
VE is celebrated and marked as a bank holiday.
But this year of 2020 is the 75th anniversary of VE, and lots
of celebrations will be taking place all over the country. Although this year people will be staying
home, there are lots of ways to celebrate the day!
Have a
look at this clip which explains all about what VE day is and the events which
led to the end of the war in Europe.
Who is this man?
Find out who he was and why he is considered such an important person in British history with this Newsround piece entitled:
VE Day: What is it, when is it and why do we remember?

Morse Code Challenge!
Morse Code
Morse code was
heavily used for secret transmissions during WWI and WWII.
Morse code is a
type of code that is used to send telegraphic information using rhythm. Morse code uses dots and dashes to show
the alphabet letters, numbers, punctuation and special characters of a given
message.
Here is the morse code
alphabet. Can you work out what your
name would be in Morse code?
Have a look at
the Morse code alphabet and use it to work out this message!
Not to worry about this last part of the challenge. We don't necessarily have buzzers or tiny light bulbs at home like we do in school with the electricity kits. You can improvise and make any sound or small light, like a torch, but don't wear the batteries out - ask your adult first!
VE DAY 2020!
This year marks a special anniversary of this day of
celebration:
For this week’s art, make a poster or
your own bunting to mark the day!
Be sure to include the colours of the flag
in your work!
Happy VE Day (tomorrow) and have fun!
