Maths Friday 5th June

What time is it?

Here we have two different clocks showing the same time:  an analogue clock with the round ‘face’ and a digital clock.  How many minutes is it past the hour?

What is the difference between am and pm?   Remember, we use am for the morning until 12 noon, when we use pm for the next 12 hours.

How many minutes past the hour tells us the digital time.  Have a look at these analogue clocks, say the time out loud first, using both the analogue time ("quarter past...") and the digital time (" __ fifteen") for a bit more practice.

Try these:

How many hours in a whole day?  Twenty-four!  An analogue clock shows 12 hours, a digital clock will show 24.
Midnight on a digital clock will be 00:00.  Five minutes before that is 23:55.

One o’clock in the morning(1 am) will be 01:00

This analogue clock shows us the hours and the minutes past the hour.  It's easiest to count in fives, though every minute counts!

When telling the time with a digital clock, we always say the hour first, so this would read 12:15 ("twelve fifteen")

Now try this problem below.  Look carefully at the minutes past.  Can you convert the time shown on this analogue clock into digital time before working out what trains Jack has missed and what choices of trains he could take now?

You can have lots of practice with an interactive clock face using the following link.  Be sure the Mode is set to Time.  You can press the play button at the top right of the screen (see this image) to watch the video and hear the full explanation first:

(You can set the clock for 12 hours or 24 hours.)
