History Thursday 4th June

1)  a) What were some of the comics written for girls? and boys?

     b) What phrases did the character Leila Carroll say?  Have you ever heard that expression?

     c) How different might comics have been from those of today?

2)  Imagine a sweet shop opposite Poplars Farm Primary School!  Here are some very different sounding names of sweets from today's kind.  What can you find out about them, for example, what they were made of?

3)  Finally, have a look at the mention of the money in those days.  It was very different, in pounds, shillings and pence.  The image of whose head is on the side we see here?

For an Extra Challenge, find out what you can about some of these terms, such as the halfpenny and 3d mentioned above, and more!

Reflection:
Imagine yourself as a child back then, knowing what you know now.  Do you think you would enjoy the different way of life from today?  How might it be different for you?
Do you read similar comics?  Would you like to read comics like these?  Why or why not?
